Mire gondolt, amikor először hallott a Pécsi Tangó Fesztiválról, amit ráadásul már másodszorra rendeznek meg?
What were your first thoughts when you heard there will be a Tango Festival, already for the second time in Pécs?
Kellemes meglepetés volt. Főképp azért, mert nincs semmiféle összefüggésben a pécsi fellépésemmel, csupán egy hihetetlen véletlenről van szó. Most, hogy hallom, ez már a második ilyen fesztivál a városban, büszke vagyok rá, hogy a hazám egyik zenei stílusa ilyen érdeklődést vált ki a pécsiekből!
It was a nice surprise. Mostly because even if it has nothing to do with my presence in Pécs, it is an incredible coincidence. And now that you mention that it is the second Festival in Pécs with such a thematic, I can say I’m proud to know one of the music styles of my country awakes so much interest in Pécs.
Argentin művészként miképp viszonyul a tangóhoz? Tudja táncolni?
As an Argentine artist, what are your personal feelings about tango? Anyway, can you dance
it?
A tangó, szemben azzal, ahogyan a legtöbben hiszik, nem egész Argentína zenéje, hanem leginkább Buenos Airesé. Olyannyira, hogy a hivatalos zenei meghatározása “folklore ciudadano”, vagyis „városi folklór”, ami nyilván más, mint a népi vagy vidéki. Ezzel együtt a tangó azért jelen van a fővároson kívül is, nagyon is, de a helyi identitásnak messze nem olyan fajsúlyos része, mint Buenos Airesban. A pécsi koncerten előadok majd néhány argentin dalt, amik népi dallamok nyomán születtek, de ezek közül egyik sem tangó. Szívesen énekeltem volna valamelyik klasszikus tangó-dalt, de amikor a fesztiválra szóló meghívás eljutott hozzám, már véglegesítettük a koncert műsorát.
Ami a tangóhoz való viszonyulásomat illet, két dolgot kell említenem: a személyes aspektust, ami a gyerekkoromhoz kötődik, és a szakmait. Rosarióban születettem, és bár ebben a városban is létezett tangó, messze nem volt olyan markáns, mint a fővárosban. Ráadásul, mivel a felmenőim kivétel nélkül európaiak voltak, sajnálatos módon a helyi népzene nem volt jelen a gyerekkoromban. Később, amikor már hivatásos muzsikus lettem, rögtön vonzani kezdett és kíváncsivá tett a zenei ritmusnak és melódiáknak ez a gazdag forrása. Tán nem véletlen, hogy az egyik legsikeresebb lemezem lett az Anhelo, amit teljes egészében a szülőhazám zenéjének szenteltem.
Tango, contrary to what people think, is not music from the “whole” Argentinean country, but mostly connected with Buenos Aires. So much so that in musicology, Tango’s category is that of the “folklore ciudadano”, that is to say, “urban folklore”, as opposite to “inland folklore”. This doesn’t mean tango is absent from the rest of the country, on the contrary, but not as part of the local identity as it is so in Buenos Aires. In my concert in Pécs I will
perform some Argentinean chamber songs, some of them based on our folkloric styles, but none of them are tango. I would have loved to sing at least one of our most classical tangos as part of my concert, but by the time I was invited to the opening of the tango festival, the program was already closed. About my feelings with tango, you have to consider them from
two different points of view: the personal, linked to my childhood, and the professional. I was born in Rosario, and even if tango is also present in my city, it is not with such a strong footprint as it is in the capital. Apart from that, in my family, that is 100% descendant of Europeans, to my regret the folkloric music was not very much present during my childhood. But then, when I became a professional musician, I immediately felt attracted and curious about such a rich source of music rhythms and melodic inspiration. Actually, one of the most successful recordings of my career is “Anhelo”, a CD entirely dedicated to my country’s music.
Hogyan látja a tangó szerepét a klasszikus és kortárs argentin, illetve világzenében?
How do you see the role of the tango in classical and contemporary Argentine and world music?
A népzene minden idők zenéjére hatással volt. Magyarországon például egyértelmű, hogy Bartók és Kodály zenéjére mennyire ihlető volt a magyar népzene.
Folklore has influenced the music of all times. In Hungary, for example, lots of Kodaly’s or Bartok’s musics are inspired by Hungarian dances...
Mikor, hogyan kezdődött a kapcsolata Magyarországgal, Budapesttel, és milyen az manapság?
When did your connexion start to Hungary and Budapest and how did it develop to this level when you are a frequent guest here?
Huszonkét évvel ezelőtt adtam az első koncertemet Budapesten, és azonnal megvolt az emberi és szakmai szimpátia. Azóta a pályám sikerei közül sok minden kötődik Magyarországhoz. Néhány hete a Requiem Æternam című művem bemutatója volt Budapesten a Magyar Rádió Művészeti Együtteseivel, aminek története során én voltam az első rezidens vendégművészük egészen az idei évig, amíg a szerződésem szólt. Most újabb magyar zenei kapcsolatokat keresek, hogy ne kelljen túl sokat távol legyek innen a jövőben sem. Talán Pécs a következő állomás?
I did my first concert in Budapest 22 years ago and the human and musical connection was immediate. Since then, a big chunk of my career achievements are connected to Hungary. Some weeks ago the premier of my “Requiem æternam" took place in Budapest, with the Hungarian Radio Art groups, an ensemble of which I have been the first guest resident artist
in its history, until this year in which my contract expired. Now I am looking forward to new Hungarian connections so that I don’t have to we away for too long in the future. Maybe Pécs?
Amúgy már járt egyszer Pécsen. Milyen benyomása volt a városról és miképp készül a szeptember 8-i fellépésére a Kodály Központban?
You have already visited Pécs - how did you like it and what are your expectations of the concert in the Kodály Hall on 8th September?
A járvány alatt látogattam el Pécsre, amikor a város le volt zárva, úgyhogy csak azt láttam, hogy nagyon szép, de amíg nem ismerem meg az ott élők lelkét, nem mondhatom ezt, hogy ismerem a várost. Ezért aztán nagyon várom már a pécsi programot. Mint hivatásos zenész, arról azért volt módom meggyőződni, hogy a Kodály Központ lenyűgöző „zenei hangszer”. Kíváncsi vagyok, hogy tényleg olyan jó lesz-e ott fellépni, ahogy a látvány és a várakozás alapján most elképzelem, milyen csodás lehet benne előadni!
My visit to Pécs was during the pandemic, the whole city was closed so my only impressions are those of the “outsides”, beautiful, yes, but until I don’t meet the “souls” that inhabit such nice city, I cannot say I know the place. Therefore I am very much looking forward to this Pécs experience! One thing I can assure, as a professional musician, is that the Kodály Hall is an amazing "music instrument” that I am very much excited to experiment to confirm
that my shock when I was inside, corresponds to what I imagine as an amazing pleasure to perform in.
